Analog high-definition television system

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Historically the term high-definition television was first used to refer to television standards developed in the 1930s to replace early experimental systems with as few as 12 lines. Not long afterwards John Logie Baird, Philo T. Farnsworth and Vladimir Zworykin had each developed competing TV systems, but resolution was not the issue that separated their substantially different technologies, it was patent interference lawsuits and deployment issues given the tumultuous financial climate of the late ’20s and ’30s.

The British 405-line system was the first to advertise itself as high definition and see widespread use. Most patents were expiring by the end of World War II leaving the market wide open and no worldwide standard for television agreed upon. The standards introduced in the early 1950s stayed for over half a century.

firefox addons – Fantastic New FireFox OS Addons

Six Experimental Firefox Extensions We Love

We love Firefox for its extensibility, but sometimes we run into an extension or two that dons the “Experimental” label on the Firefox add-ons site. We prefer highlighting extensions once they’ve been approved by Mozilla—both so we know they’ve been vetted and so we can save you the effort of registering with Mozilla to install something—so we generally pass them by. When enough of them pile up in our watch list, we highlight them in one big post (see our two previous posts) in an effort to give the extensions the extra push of popularity that can expedite the approval process. So without further ado, read on for a closer look at seven awesome Firefox extensions we’re into.

FireStatus

FireStatus lets you send simultaneous updates to multiple social networks—namely Twitter, Facebook, and FriendFeed. That’s not a bad start, but it goes the extra mile by also displaying your friends’ updates through notification pop-ups (uses Growl in OS X). It also integrates with the most popular URL shrinking site, TinyURL.

Tabgroups-Plus

Tabgroups-Plus allows you to organize your Firefox tabs in even more tabs. An update to previously mentioned Tab Groups, Tabgroups-Plus does the same drag and drop organization of tabs within user-defined parent tabs, but this version supports Firefox 3 where the old version did not.

GCal Popup

GCal Popup opens Google Calendar in an overlay over any web page, giving you quick access to your agenda without leaving the page you’re already visiting. To toggle the calendar, simply click the Google Calendar icon in the corner of your status bar. [via]

xbox live down – Microsoft improves Games for Windows Live

Microsoft improves Games for Windows Live, still has work to do

We give Microsoft credit for finally understanding that what works on a console won’t necessarily appeal to PC gamers. First, it stripped away the much-derided, fee-based Games for Windows Live Gold membership level. Now the entire Games for Windows Live interface has received an update. The Xbox 360-style “blade” interface is gone, replaced by a fully mouse-driven drop-down menu system. If it only worked as well as it should.

To clarify, you’re not intended to download a GFW Live client for your PC, at least not yet (technically you can). For the moment, you’re instead supposed to launch any GFW Live-enabled game, log in to the Live service, and from there follow the update prompt. Microsoft says a separate downloadable client is coming, along with a PC gaming-oriented Marketplace that will sell updated content for GFW Live-supported games.

The main Games for Windows Live menu (GamerTag redacted).

(Credit: CNET)

For now, you can use the GFW Live service to socialize and find people to play with from your Windows or Xbox Live friends lists. It also includes an achievement system, as well as an update monitor, which can be both a blessing and a curse. For example, the recent Fallout 3 patch has its share of problems, but GFW Live requires you to update, or else it will log you out (the same is true of Valve’s Steam service, GFW Live’s primary competition).

We also had problems with our mouse cursor tracking properly across the Live screens in Fallout 3 (other Fallout 3 users have reported the same issue). We weren’t able to try other GFW Live games, so we have no word on whether the tracking issues are universal.

Your Gamer Profile carries over from Xbox Live.

(Credit: CNET)

The saving grace for GFW Live is that you don’t have to use it. If you’re annoyed by it, you can simply opt out and find your friends and game patches through traditional channels. You may be cut-off from downloadable content, but at least you don’t lose anything from core gameplay.

Even if it’s not flawless, Games for Windows Live 2.0’s interface is a marked improvement over the original version. It also lays the groundwork for what Microsoft hopes will one day become a full-fledged PC gaming marketplace, potentially with full game downloads. Given the success of Xbox Live for the Xbox 360, it’s certainly understandable that Microsoft would want to duplicate that experience on the PC. We daresay it might even be good for PC gaming as a whole if Microsoft eventually gets it right.

TouchSmart tx2 – HP launches launches – On sale tomorrow

While gawkers have been breathlessly predicting that Apple would be adapting its multi-touch technology for a tablet PC, the first laptop with a multi-touch screen is actually coming out from a quite different company: Hewlett-Packard.

Put simply: HP’s TouchSmart tx2 adds a multi-touch screen to a traditional, convertible tablet computer. This means you can use a finger or two to draw on the screen, browse the web, click icons, and control media through HP’s homegrown MediaSmart application. As with the iPhone, the screen uses a capacitive sensor so you don’t have to press hard on the screen to register a tap or a trace. However, unlike the iPhone, if you want to do detail work (like writing in longhand or doing a detailed illustration), you can use the included pen to put a finer point on things.

Under the hood, the TouchSmart tx2 is still a Vista laptop, which means it has all the tablet functions of the standard Windows OS. (If you’ve never used a tablet, Vista includes write-on-the-screen features by default… but only if the hardware supports it.)

Some specs are on the lighter side, featuring your choice of AMD-based CPUs (no Intel here, sorry). The 12.1-inch screen is powered by an ATI Radeon HD 3200 CPU, and hard drives will range from 160 to 500GB. Wi-Fi is integrated, but there’s no integrated WWAN feature available.

Because the TouchSmart is built on Windows, don’t expect a radical departure from the current state of the art: Multi-touch trackpads have shown up on a few notebooks so far, and while the advances are interesting, they aren’t revolutionary. HP, however, has a history of innovating software as well as hardware — the MediaSmart application looks to be an interesting first step toward making fuller use of multi-touch, so watch this space to see what happens from here.

Prices start at a reasonable $1,150 (though that’s tentative). The TouchSmart tx2 goes on sale tomorrow with shipping at the end of the month.

10 Ways to Save Big on Thanksgiving Dinner

Spend $5 or Less Per Person on Turkey Day Without Going Pot Luck

NEW YORK (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) November 20, 2008 — Thanksgiving is just one week away and it’s time to start planning the meal. Commonly thought of as one of the most expensive meals of the year, it’s actually quite easy to spend just $5 or less per person on such a large meal without going pot luck.

Shortcuts.com, a free, totally paperless electronic coupon service, offers ten ways to save serious money on Thanksgiving dinner this year.

News Image 1) Make a List. One of the easiest ways to over-spend on the Thanksgiving meal is to over-shop. Make a list of what you need and stick to it to keep money in your pocket.

2) Seek Out Coupons. You’ll find more coupons than normal in the Sunday paper and online at sites like Shortcuts.com that can be used on the holiday dinner. Alone these can cut costs significantly, but pair sales with coupons to save major dollars. Also, check out the Thanksgiving Dinner Meal Deal on Shortcuts.com to save big on turkey, mashed potatoes, crescent rolls, pie crusts and whipped topping.

3) Buy a Frozen Turkey. You can save 30-40% by choosing a frozen turkey over a fresh turkey. Allow four to five days for the turkey to thaw completely in your refrigerator.

4) Know How Much You Need… Take a headcount of how many people will be at the table and visit a site like AllRecipes.com to calculate a recipe based on the number of people eating dinner.

5) …Then Make Less Than You Need. There are so many must-have side dishes – mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole – that guests won’t be taking their usual helpings. Make 10-20% less of each dish and you should still have plenty of food.

6) Save on Side Dishes. There are simple ways to modify traditional favorites to save money. For green bean casserole, mix frozen green beans with frozen corn. Once cooked, top with Parmesan cheese and bread crumbs to save money on cream soup and canned fried onions.

7) Cut Costs with Dinner Drinks. If you plan to serve wine with dinner, consider boxed wine that can cost about half as much as bottled wine. For added cost savings, mix red wine with club soda to create sangria and serve in a carafe.

8) Make Your Own Pies. Pumpkin pie is cheaper to make than to buy. Plus, frozen pie crusts can be found on sale. Pumpkin pie is surprisingly easy to make and tastes better than store-bought too!

9) Look for “Loss Leader” Items. Grocery stores are advertising more holiday-related “loss leaders,” or deeply discounted items, on the front pages of their ads. You can easily score major savings on stuffing, rolls, potatoes and pie crusts this way.

10) Know Price Matching Policies. Some stores will match the advertised prices at other grocery retailers. This will keep you from driving from store to store if you can get most everything at one store.

YouTube is King of Video Sharing … Vote at Mashable…

This article is part of the Open Web Awards, an open, international contest for the best websites and services.

There is no disputing that YouTube is the most popular video site – its videos are viewed 10x more in total than the nearest competitor. And, not surprisingly, YouTube also has the early lead in votes in The Open Web Awards. But a number of other video sites – most of which offer some sort of unique twist beyond simple video sharing – are also getting some love from voters and have an outside shot at victory. Here’s a look at the remaining competitors:

12seconds – as the name suggests, gives you 12 seconds to create a video blog that you can share with friends and family.

ffwd – a video aggregator of professional and personal videos based on your personal preferences and likes.

Outshouts – lets you share your thoughts in audio message form and network with others’ personal “outshouts”

Qik – streams live video from a supported mobile phone.

Sevenload – Germany-based video sharing site, though there is an English version available.

TeacherTube – a video sharing site for education that offers courses in mathematics, literature, science, and more.

Veoh – allows you to watch television online and share videos. Earlier this year, Veoh partnered with Ustream.TV.

Viddler – another video sharing site that also lets you publish 15-second videos.

VideoSurf – gives searchers the ability to find and enjoy videos that meet specific criteria.

Vimeo – a user-generated social video site that offers videos in high definition.

YouTube – The Google-owned video sharing giant.

nokia n97 – Will this rival the iphone? The New The Nokia N97

iPhone Beware, The Nokia N97 Is Coming

Source PCWORLD

After months of waiting, Nokia finally announced the N97, the company’s second (unreleased) device to challenge the iPhone and revive to the N-series to their former glory. With a 3.5″ touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and 32GB of memory, the N97 is one phone worth waiting for in the New Year.

Expected spring next year, the N97 features a kick-out QWERTY keyboard that is hidden behind the phone’s 3.5″ – 16:9 aspect ratio – touchscreen. As a worthy iPhone competitor, the N97 rocks a 5-megapixel camera on the back with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash. Also, unlike the iPhone or the T-Mobile G1, the N97 can capture video in DVD quality in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Storage-wise, the N97 does very well also. The phone comes with 32GB of on-board memory – that is twice the amount of memory the most expensive iPhone brings. As an extra, the capacity can be extended with microSD cards of up to 16GB, ranking up to a potential 48GB of storage on the N97.

Priced at around $700 before carrier subsidies (simfree), the N97 is a 3G phone that can also do HSDPA speeds of 7.2Mb/s (obviously, if your carrier can handle it) and Wi-Fi. The usual flavor of A-GPS with an electronic compass is present, and if you plan to keep yourself entertained with this phone, Nokia says that the N97 can deliver up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video playback.

Now, even with all these high specs, a good mobile phone would be nothing without software – and Nokia seems to deliver a good offering in this category. The N97 runs on Symbian S50 5th Edition and brings the familiar interface from the (yet unreleased) 5800 Express Music, previously known as ‘Tube’.

What’s new from Nokia in the software side of things is the ability of having home screen widgets on the N97. Nokia says that these widgets will enable you to update social networks automatically with your status and location as well as related pictures or video.

Nokia will also start competing with Apple’s MobileMe service by launching new features for Ovi – the company’s social portal. N97 users will be able to have their own free Ovi email account and will be able to enjoy push-like email as well as calendar and contacts synchronizing – T-Mobile G1 style.

True Blood: The Complete First Season (HBO Series) (2009)

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Alan Ball’s True Blood series works well for television, as it has enough sensationalism to tantalize and enough story girth to make the viewer care about the characters. That one can finally invest emotion into monsters, including an undead Civil War victim, a transformer who can shapeshift into various animals, and a female mind reader, speaks volumes about America’s willingness to accept fantasy. Of course, television has always produced good fantasy shows (I Dream of Jeannie), but True Blood’s Southern Goth brand of fun horror is more macabre and more perverse, not to mention gorier, than most shows of its kind to date. Adapted from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels, True Blood thrills because of its equal blend in each episode of erotica, humor, tragedy, mystery, and fantasy.

Set in a rural, swampy Louisiana parrish, the show centers around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her clan, sweet grandmother Adele (Lois Smith) and air-headed brother Jason (Ryan Kwanten). Illicit love is spawned early on, when Sookie saves vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) from having his blood stolen in the parking lot of Merlotte’s diner, owned by Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell) who completes what will form a complex love triangle. As tensions between Sookie’s suitors loosen or tighten, many side plots, such as her African American best friend Tara’s (Rutina Wesley) struggle with an alcoholic, Bible-thumping mother and her brother’s dangerous crush on drug addicted hippie, Amy Burley (Lizzy Caplan), keep one wondering who will succeed in this podunk place. The main tension throughout, however, is a race war waged between vampires and humans. As murders of “fang bangers” occur (human girls who let vampires bite them) and dumb policeman Andy Bellefleur (Chris Bauer) fails to find clues, one sees the metaphorical implications of vampirism and feels deeper resonance with what can be a downright trashy show. Gossip galore, especially about what kinds of babies interbreeding will produce, is rampant. One of the funniest characters is Tara’s flamboyant cousin, Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), who deals drugs, works as a fry cook, and services the local white politicians, while making sure he’s always up in everyone’s business.

What makes True Blood smarter than pure soap opera is the parallels it draws between its monster mash and actual, familiar societal problems. Sookie and her friends watch the news, where Evangelicals bash vampires and prohibit mixed marriage, and everyone is addicted to V, a.k.a vampire blood, that effects like psychedelic heroin. Even its gore reflects a mix of serious and silly, as vampires explode into red, sticky goop. Though it may not be attempting to qualify for the best vampire footage ever shot, True Blood is as addictive as that substance the town’s youth obsesses over, which is a metaphor in itself. –Trinie Dalton
